Deep Space Destructors: II
02/01/13 || gk
I reviewed Finland’s Deep Space Destructors a while back on GD and I was a recording that showed a fair bit of promise. The band played stoner rock with hints of doom and psychedelia and now, some 10 months later, the band is back with its second release aptly titled “II”.
The album starts with Beneath the black star and its slow build up leads to a space rock approach to doom metal that is really quite good. It’s a solid song to start proceedings. Deserted planet 2078 has a vibe to it that’s a lot more prog rock oriented and the gentle shimmering guitars during the opening mask the fact that the song gets busier as it moves along. There’s an excellent lead guitar section about halfway through the song and it ends with a solid up-tempo guitar part. “Spacy Phantasy”: http://deepspacedestructors.bandcamp.com/track/spacy-phantasy has a slight funk feel to it and some very cool bass playing while the final song on this recording “Sykli” is all gentle and spaced out guitars with a very catchy clean vocal line.
It feels like they’ve dropped some of the various influences that gave their debut a slightly jumbled feel and instead focused on long, organic jams with plenty of catchy parts. It has to be said that the vocals have improved a great deal too while the guitar playing is top notch. Mention must be made of the bass playing. It has a warm and welcoming tone and the bass player very successfully fills in the gaps in the sound with some inventive and tasteful playing.
This is a massive step up for the band. There’s an improvement in every aspect of the playing and song writing and the band sounds a lot more confident on “II”. This growth in the band is even more impressive when considering that “I” was only released in January 2012. The songs are all long but at no point do they feel forced. Deep Space Destructors are well on their way with this new recording. Fans of stoner/ space/psychedelic rock would do well to give this album a shot.
